Viox & Viox is proud to have played a key role in the significant upgrade of the 100 Block of East First Street in Silver Grove, Kentucky. Thanks to our civil engineering expertise, we addressed long-standing drainage issues and enhanced the street’s overall functionality and safety for both drivers and pedestrians. In fact, after the completion of this project, there was no flooding in the area following Hurricane Helene—demonstrating the effectiveness of the improvements we made.
Project Overview
The project involved the complete removal of the existing 21’ asphalt street and roadside drainage ditches. In its place, we designed a new 26’ wide concrete street, including a 6” integral box curb. To enhance pedestrian access and safety, we added a 5′ wide sidewalk on both sides of the street, along with driveway aprons.
Key Features of the Project:
- Street Grading: The street was carefully regraded to adjust high and low points, ensuring proper drainage along the gutterline and eliminating ponding issues.
- Drainage Improvements: New street catch basins were installed and reconstructed, and additional basins were placed in front yards where necessary to replace old drainage structures previously located in roadside ditches.
- Storm Sewer Upgrades: The existing storm sewer, owned by SD1, was inspected, and new storm sewers were constructed, which will also be owned and maintained by SD1.
- Sidewalks and Parking: The new design includes 5’ wide sidewalks on both sides of the street and allows for parallel parking along the new roadway.
Addressing Decades-Long Issues
Before the upgrade, East First Street had significant stormwater management problems, including ponding in yards, driveways, and along the street itself. With the area being very flat, the design had to carefully balance the grading to prevent future water accumulation. By collaborating closely with the City and local residents, Viox & Viox worked to identify and correct all known drainage issues. The true test of the project’s success came during Hurricane Helene, when the area remained flood-free, proving the effectiveness of the stormwater management improvements.
Funding and Construction
We obtained a 50/50 cost match from SD1 to fund the necessary storm sewer upgrades. The project was constructed by Rector Excavating during the summer of 2024. In advance of the roadway work, Viox & Viox also coordinated with NKWD to design and replace the aging water main, which was installed by Rector Excavating in the fall of 2023.
This comprehensive project not only resolved longstanding infrastructure challenges but also enhanced the quality of life for the Silver Grove community. At Viox & Viox, we take pride in delivering practical, long-lasting solutions. The transformation of East First Street, with its demonstrated resilience against major storms, showcases our commitment to excellence. Contact us for your civil engineering needs!
